Vyasayogi Charitam (English Translation)

Sri Vyasatirtha stands among the most eminent philosophers and saints of India and is celebrated as one of the greatest dialecticians of the Dvaita Vedānta tradition. His three monumental works—Tatparya Chandrikā, Nyāyamṛta, and Tarka Tāṇḍava—collectively known as the Vyāsa-traya, established a formidable intellectual foundation for Dvaita Vedānta and engaged deeply with the major philosophical schools of his time.

His influence extended far beyond the world of philosophy. As a revered saint, teacher, and spiritual guide, Sri Vyasatirtha played a significant role in the cultural and spiritual life of the Vijayanagara Empire. Emperor Krishnadevaraya regarded him with profound reverence, while his association with the Haridāsa movement helped bring the profound teachings of Vedānta closer to the common people. His association with saints such as Sri Purandara Dāsa and Sri Kanaka Dāsa remains an important chapter in Karnataka's spiritual and cultural history.

Around 1535 CE, the poet Somanātha composed the Vyasayogi Charitam, a celebrated biography of Sri Vyasatirtha in the Champū Kāvyā tradition, combining prose and verse. Renowned for both its literary excellence and historical value, the work stands as an important source for understanding the life and legacy of the great saint.

The present edition brings this important classical work to a wider readership. Sri Venkateshacharya Kulkarni's acclaimed Kannada translation, published by the Sri Vyasatirtha Samshodhana Pratishthanam, forms the foundation of the present English edition. Sri M. A. Sudarshan has rendered the Kannada translation into English, while Dr. K. Giridharacharya, the editor, has contributed a comprehensive biographical account of Sri Vyasaraja, providing valuable context for readers. Mr. Prateek has undertaken the proofreading and textual corrections.

Through this collaborative endeavour, the life, scholarship, and spiritual legacy of Sri Vyasatirtha are made accessible to a wider audience, preserving an invaluable part of Karnataka's intellectual and devotional heritage.
